Finke River Journey

In 2008 I went on an art camp with my family run by Deborah Clarke in the centre of Australia exploring the Larapinta Trail, which included the Finke River, Ormiston Gorge and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Heading out from Alice Springs we embarked on a week of camping, art-making and walking adventures within a very spiritual, mysterious world ...

This series of artworks was born from that experience and as usual I got lost in the process! A fabulous state whereby I am totally absorbed yet at the same time, fully aware. A calm frenzy!!

The series is a story of a city girl who travels to the heart of the Australian desert. Returning home she realises she's been fortunate to have experienced the best of both worlds. The mystery of the desert - and the familiarity of her home by the sea.

Some objects & colours depict home - a floating dress, pages from a novel, a “due date” slip from a library book. The desert is represented by the colour palette with hessian, rusty metal, sand, timber off-cuts.

Amongst it all is one lost - or is that found? - jigsaw piece.
Where do we fit?
